I was introduced to Green Woodworking in 2001 by Mike Abbott. After making two styles of chair under his guidance. Like so many others, I was inspired to set up a workshop of my own and start making Welsh stick chairs and ladder backs.
In 2007 friends Geoff Brown and Kate Hadley began to develop 'Spinney Hollow' a woodland project near Fair Oak, Hampshire. At this time I was looking for a venue to run chair making courses and Spinney Hollow provided the perfect setting.
Since then, a great partnership has developed. Geoff provides tuition on the courses and Kates role is 'wood host', she makes sure everyone is comfortable, helps out in the workshop and keeps the tea flowing!
We also promote the courses
together on our summer tour of fayres and festivals. Visit us at one of these events and try your hand at some pole-lathe turning. There is a calander of events on the news page.
We offer a 6 day chair making course where you will experience the satisfaction of turning a freshly cut log into a beautiful chair using simple hand tools. Shorter courses are offered, introducing a number of other Greenwood skills. I am also available for 1/ 2 on one tuition
throughout the year at my workshop in Alresford Hampshire.
There is a beautiful simplicity to working green wood.
When a tree is felled, the wood is wet and is easy to split, cut, shave and shape using basic hand tools.
Working with the wood in this way produces furniture that is strong yet elegant, retaining the flowing nature of the wood.
Well managed woodlands provide the raw materials required and a perfect setting to create your own masterpiece that should last for generations.
